Some 59 students at Buruburu Girls High School were rushed to Metropolitan Hospital after they were trapped in a dormitory fire yesterday.
Several students were treated and discharged.
Other students were hospitalized, and are said to be in a stable condition.
“Our team of trauma and emergency medicine have stabilized and discharged a total of 30 students already. We remain committed to the safety of our communities,” the Metropolitan Hospital stated.
Videos that went viral online showed distraught residents gazing at the burning dormitory as several students tried to escape through the windows to save their lives.
Shortly after the news broke out, parents flocked at the school and demanded to take their children home.
However, police and the school administration managed to contain the parents as the fire fighters struggled to put out the fire.
Buruburu Sub-County Police Commander Francis Kamau confirmed the incident saying the cause of the fire that started at around 5 pm was yet to be established.
“Officers and firefighters are at the schools, but it is still too early to know what happened or the extent of the damage,” Kamau stated.
The school management, however, said none of the students sustained severe burns after the fire at the Kingdom dormitory.
The school has since been closed indefinitely following the incident.
