Wazito FC has on Friday morning named captain Dennis Gicheru as the new club Chief Executive Officer. The club was founded in the year 2011 by merging the University of Nairobi (U.O.N) college team and a group of alumni.
Captain Dennis until his appointment was the Wazito’s defender.
According to a statement from the club, Mr Dennis underwent knee surgery in August and “will not be part of the playing unit until at least the end of the first leg and takes up his new role in the club executive.” It read in part.
He helped the team bounce back to the Kenyan Premier League at the end of the 2018/19 campaign.
“As part of our policy of nurturing and exposing talents outside the realm of active football play, we wish to confirm that the club has appointed Dennis Gicheru as the club CEO effective immediately as he recovers and recuperates from his injury,” the club President, Ricardo Badoer, said.
He further stated that the defender is at liberty to resume playing once he recovers or walk away from active football altogether and focus on his new role as the club CEO
“Let it be noted that the club has given him the option to either pursue his football career once he recovers or to fully decide to take up the role. We wish him well as he undertakes his new duties geared towards scaling the club to greater heights,” he added.
Picking the job
Mr Dennis has gladly picked the new job, thanked the club and stated that he will work with everyone to ensure that the club is successful on and off the pitch.
“I want to thank the club president for believing in me. This is entirely a new field but it’s one I believe I can excel in. I will work with everyone within and outside the Wazito family to ensure that the club is successful on and off the pitch,” he stated.
