Lorenzo Soria, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association –the non-profit organization that conducts the annual Golden Globes awards is dead. The announcement of his death was made by the association, who confirmed that he died in his Los Angeles home at the age of 68 but the cause of death was not confirmed in the statement. However, a report published by the Hollywood Reporter showed that he was battling lung cancer.
As a man who wore many hats, the industry recognized him as a journalist, an editor and an entertainment executive throughout his long-running career in Europe and the US.
In a statement issued by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, he was referred to as a man who was deeply committed “to the industry’s power to heal the world and shine a spotlight on injustice.”
A member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) since 1989, he is remembered for his contributions to the association itself which brings together journalists and photographers in the entertainment industry.
The Argentinian-born, Italian journalist spent five terms (25 years) after serving twice before as president. His current tenure began in 2019 as the head of the organization that’s behind the production of the Golden Globes.
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1951, Soria was 11 when his family moved to Europe before settling in the US, in 1982. The man described as full of humour by industry peers formerly wrote and edited for the Italian publications L’Espresso (starting in 1977) and La Stampa- an Italian daily newspaper during his stay in Europe.
A memorial is planned but details are expected to be availed in the coming days, said the group, which cited an unidentified Soria family member in its announcement of his death.
HFPA in its statement continued to remember Soria as a journalist who covered politics, technology, society among other topics in relation to trends and changes in the film and television industry. Also, in a series of tributes from leading journalists, publicists, and entertainment executives, Soria has been described as a man of integrity, hilarious, and a great writer.
HFPA statement of Soria’s death concluded by stating, “Lorenzo was a beloved member of the entertainment industry and the Hollywood community and will be sorely missed.”
