UASU vows to keep universities shut as lecturers’ strike enters second month over unfulfilled CBA

The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) has reaffirmed its commitment to continue the ongoing nationwide lecturers’ strike until the government fully addresses their grievances.

UASU Secretary-General Dr. Constantine Wesonga declared that no learning activities will resume in public universities until the lecturers’ demands for better pay, improved working conditions, and the implementation of the 2021–2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) are met.

Speaking during a press briefing in Nairobi, Dr. Wesonga accused the government of ignoring the plight of university staff despite numerous appeals and negotiations.

He stated that lecturers have endured long-standing delays in salary reviews and the non-remittance of statutory deductions, which he said have worsened their economic situation.

“We have been patient for too long. The government must honour the CBA it signed and respect the dignity of university workers,” Wesonga said firmly.

The strike, which has entered its third week, has disrupted learning in several public universities across the country, leaving thousands of students stranded.

UASU branches in major institutions, including the University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University, Moi University, and Maseno University, have all downed tools in solidarity with the national call.

In response, the Ministry of Education urged lecturers to return to work as negotiations continue, warning that the prolonged industrial action could derail the academic calendar.

However, Wesonga dismissed the appeal, insisting that dialogue must be backed by action.

“We will not be intimidated or persuaded by empty promises. The government must show goodwill through implementation,” he added.
