Makueni County is mourning the passing of Sonnia Nzilani Musyoka, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Trade, Marketing, Industry, Culture, and Tourism.Her death, confirmed by colleague Dr. Paul Musila, reportedly occurred at her home.
Nzilani, a well-regarded public servant, had a notable career in county governance and community development.
She began her current position in February 2024, playing a key role in advancing trade, tourism, and cultural projects throughout Makueni. Before this role, she held the position of county minister for Lands, Urban Planning and Development, Environment, and Climate Change from November 2022 to February 2024.
During her time in this capacity, she was acknowledged for her commitment to public service and her initiatives to enhance local infrastructure and manage environmental concerns effectively.
However, her career also faced challenges. Nzilani attracted national attention after making comments that connected a young girl’s death to her menstrual cycle, which led to significant public discussion.
Nevertheless, she remained a significant player in county politics and development, with many recognizing her dedication to her responsibilities. Colleagues and community members have expressed their grief and shock at her unexpected passing, with numerous condolence messages highlighting her influence on both her professional environment and the communities she served.
