SOG officers foil Major Al-Shabaab attack after intercepting militants planting IEDs in Garissa

Kenya’s security agencies have continued to demonstrate vigilance in the ongoing fight against terrorism following the latest operation in Garissa County, where the elite Special Operations Group (SOG) stopped a planned attack.

Acting on intelligence from residents, the officers moved swiftly and intercepted eight Al-Shabaab militants who were setting up improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the Welmerer-Yumbia area.

The alertness of the local community and the quick response by the unit prevented what could have turned into a devastating attack targeting innocent civilians and security officers.

Reports indicate that the militants were in the process of assembling the explosives when the SOG team arrived.

A brief exchange of fire ensued before the suspects fled, leaving behind several IEDs that had already been assembled and planted along the road. The devices were safely recovered and defused by the officers.

The specialized unit later confirmed that the explosives were intended to target road users along the busy Welmerer-Yumbis route, which is frequently used by both civilians and security convoys.

A statement from the Counter Terrorism Policing unit praised the bravery of the officers and emphasized the importance of community intelligence in saving lives.

“Our Elite Special Operations Group (SOG) stopped 8 Al-Shabaab terrorists who were attempting to set up Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDS) at the Welmerer-Yumbia area in Garissa,” read part of the report shared on Monday.

Adding that: “The brave officers engaged the terrorists and managed to recover assembled IEDS, which were to be used to attack our mothers, children, and security officers using the Welmerer-Yumbis road.”

The statement highlighted the role of collaboration between communities and security forces in disrupting the activities of terrorist groups.

The operation comes amid rising militant activity in northern Kenya, where Al-Shabaab has been targeting security patrols and public transport vehicles.

In July this year, three Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers lost their lives and several others were injured after their patrol vehicle hit an IED along the Sakuri-Kiunga route.

The incident was one of several attacks in Garissa and Lamu Counties that have raised concerns about the group’s attempts to regroup in border regions.

A month before the Garissa incident, four suspected Al-Shabaab militants were killed by security officers after being tracked using drones in the Najo and Guracho areas.

Police recovered rifles, a PKM machine gun, several rounds of ammunition, and communication radios from the scene.

In another operation in August, KDF troops killed at least five Al-Shabaab fighters in the Boni Forest, where the militants have been using the dense vegetation as a hideout.

The consistent pressure from security agencies has disrupted many planned attacks, but it has also shown the persistence of the terrorist threat in the region.

Security officials have continued to urge communities to remain alert and report any suspicious activity.

The latest interception by the Special Operations Group once again demonstrates the effectiveness of Kenya’s counterterrorism strategy, which combines intelligence, technology, and community partnership to keep the country safe from extremist threats.
