A 60-year-old Julius Odinga Mboga, a retired mechanic from Siaya county is stuck with 500k in old sh 1000 notes in his house located in Sirondha village.

The Siaya man failed to meet the September 30 deadline set by CBK’s governor Patrick Njoroge to exchange the old sh1000 notes with the new ones claiming he was misled by the reminder by CBK.

“When you look at the newspaper, the reminder stated that ‘Take the thousands shillings to the bank ‘no’. (He misread the last word ‘now’). Up to now, these people have refused to exchange my notes,” Mboga told the journalists.

However, his relatives claims that Mr Mboga was misled by individuals outside their home.

“We asked him whether he had one thousand shillings notes in his house before the CBK deadline but he did not want to listen to us. The people who he interacts with outside the home always told him that his brothers will take all his money, so he kept it to himself,” a relative told the media

It is said the money was part of the retirement package for this Sirondha man from Siaya county.

Over 2,000 pastoralists from Tana River and Lamu counties are also stuck with the old Sh1,000 notes.
