Online discussions in Kenya grew intense after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations shared photos of suspects linked to the alleged theft of lorries in Murang’a County.
Among those shown was Peter Njuguna Gitau, a man many Kenyans quickly recognised because of his past political career and previous government appointment.
His identity sparked surprise and strong reactions across social media platforms, where users shared old photos and records connected to his time in public service.
The DCI released the images on Sunday, February 8 as part of an update on investigations into the reported theft cases.
According to the information shared, the suspects were believed to be connected to stolen lorries, including one said to belong to the Murang’a County Government and used for garbage collection.
After the photos went public, online users began comparing the faces with well known public figures.
Within hours, many concluded that one of the suspects was a former Member of Parliament who had also served as chairperson of the Board of Directors of Sports Kenya following a presidential appointment.
Several social media users expressed shock, with some posting details about his previous leadership roles. Others said they had first assumed the older looking suspect might have been only a driver hired to transport the vehicle without knowledge of any crime.
As more details circulated, many realised that he had once held a position of trust in public service, which led to heated debate online.

Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata later confirmed that one of the suspects was indeed a former Member of Parliament.
