Saitabao Ole Kanchory raises alarm over alleged manipulation in IEBC recruitment

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Selection Panel has caused confusion and concern across the country after it added six new names to the final list of candidates for top positions in the commission.

This decision was made just days before interviews were supposed to start, raising serious questions about how transparent and fair the recruitment process really is.

Many Kenyans have been left wondering why these names were brought in so late in the process and whether the proper procedures were actually followed when selecting them.

The individuals added to the list include Hassan Noor Hassan, who is a former Chief Administrative Secretary and has a long history in provincial administration, along with Jibril Maalim Mohammed, Michaels Ben Okumu, Charles Kipyeego Mutai, Stephen Kibet Ng’etich, and Joel Mwita Daniel.

Their sudden inclusion has not gone unnoticed, especially by people who have been closely watching the IEBC and how it handles its responsibilities. With the memory of the 2022 general elections still fresh, the public remains cautious and sensitive to any changes involving the electoral commission.

Critics have quickly pointed out that the surprise addition of these six candidates may not be innocent. Some are saying that this could be a sign of behind-the-scenes interference or an attempt to favour certain individuals. These concerns are not without reason, given the history of electoral issues in the country.

Former ODM Chief Agent Saitabao Ole Kanchory has been among the loudest voices criticizing the move. He made a strong statement on social media, saying that “Rigging does not happen during elections. It happens way before elections.”

His words suggest that if the process of choosing IEBC officials is flawed from the beginning, then the integrity of future elections is already in danger.

There is now growing suspicion among opposition leaders, civil society, and the general public. Many believe that if the IEBC is filled with people who are seen as biased or selected unfairly, it may not be able to carry out its duties in a neutral and professional way.

This would be a big problem because the IEBC is trusted with making sure that elections in Kenya are free, fair, and credible. If that trust is broken, it could lead to disputes, protests, and a lack of confidence in the democratic process.

Political leaders and civil rights groups are calling on the Selection Panel to explain why these six names were added so late and whether they met the requirements like everyone else.

People want answers and accountability, especially now when public confidence in government institutions is already low.

Whether or not the process is seen as fair could have a huge impact on how people view the next election.
