The fallout between President William Ruto and his former deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, has finally been revealed, with Ruto exposing a major confrontation that led to their split.
Speaking in an exclusive interview at Sagana State Lodge, the president disclosed that Gachagua had made a shocking demand for KSh 10 billion, allegedly to “talk to the mountain people.” Ruto claims that Gachagua used this demand as a threat, warning that if he was not given the money, he would ensure Ruto served only one term.
This revelation paints a picture of the high-stakes political struggles that defined their relationship. Gachagua, who had positioned himself as the undisputed leader of the Mt. Kenya region, appeared to believe that he controlled the region’s political future.
His demand for such a large sum suggests he saw himself as the only one who could secure Ruto’s continued support in the region. However, Ruto was unwilling to meet this demand, leading to an irreversible rift between the two leaders.
The tension between Ruto and Gachagua had been building for months, with political insiders pointing to various disagreements behind the scenes. Gachagua had often projected himself as the protector of Mt. Kenya’s interests, sometimes making statements that contradicted the president’s agenda.
His insistence on a “one-man, one-vote, one-shilling” economic model had already raised concerns among leaders from other regions. Additionally, his confrontational approach towards certain political figures, including members of Ruto’s inner circle, further deepened the cracks.
Ruto’s latest revelation now explains why Gachagua faced an impeachment plan from Members of Parliament. The president hinted that he had twice intervened to stop the impeachment, suggesting that some MPs were already frustrated with Gachagua’s leadership style.

However, after the KSh 10 billion demand and the threat against his presidency, Ruto seems to have decided that the fallout was inevitable. This incident also raises questions about the political future of the Mt. Kenya region.
With Gachagua’s influence now significantly weakened, the battle for the region’s leadership is wide open. Several politicians have already begun positioning themselves as potential successors, eager to fill the vacuum left by the former deputy president.
It remains to be seen whether Gachagua will attempt a political comeback or if he will fade into the background. Ruto’s firm stance against Gachagua’s demand sends a strong message about his leadership style.
By refusing to bow to political blackmail, he is attempting to establish himself as a leader who will not be manipulated, even by those who were once close allies. However, the long-term impact of this fallout remains uncertain, especially as 2027 approaches.
