Rigathi Gachagua exposes alleged government scheme targeting judiciary independence

As per reports from various media houses, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has revealed what he claims is a government-backed plan to remove Chief Justice Martha Koome from office and dissolve the Supreme Court before the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at Meru PCEA church, Gachagua alleged that the scheme is being funded through the National Intelligence Service to ensure its success.

He pointed to the recent withdrawal of CJ Koome’s security detail as a sign of state intimidation.

Although the security was later reinstated, the move has raised serious questions about the relationship between the executive and judiciary.

Gachagua further claimed that the numerous petitions filed against Koome and other Supreme Court judges are part of a deliberate strategy by the state to undermine judicial independence.

During his address, Gachagua warned of a larger plan to dismantle the Supreme Court.

He explained that such actions are designed to establish a more compliant judiciary that aligns with the interests of the government ahead of the 2027 elections.

“There is even a bigger scheme to dismantle the Supreme Court ahead of 2027 elections,” he told the church audience, urging vigilance.

These claims come at a time of rising tensions between the judiciary and the executive.

The recent controversy surrounding the withdrawal and subsequent reinstatement of Koome’s security has further fueled concerns.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, however, defended the changes as routine procedures linked to police promotions and training, dismissing claims of targeted intimidation.

Adding to the tension is a petition filed by former Law Society of Kenya President Nelson Havi, which calls for the removal of CJ Koome and all Supreme Court judges over alleged gross misconduct.

Critics have argued that such petitions, coupled with the security withdrawal, may be part of a broader effort to destabilize the judiciary.

Gachagua has called on the international community to closely monitor these developments in Kenya.

He expressed his support for Koome, encouraging her to stand firm despite the alleged pressure.

He emphasized the need to safeguard the rule of law and constitutionalism, which he described as critical pillars of Kenya’s democracy.

The revelations have sparked widespread concern about the state of judicial independence in the country.

As the nation heads toward the 2027 elections, these developments raise questions about the strength of its democratic institutions.

Observers fear that undermining the judiciary could have lasting consequences for governance and the rule of law in Kenya.
