Religious accountability in question as Pastor Ng’ang’a faces backlash for harsh Church policies

Pastor James Ng’ang’a has once again sparked controversy after reprimanding his congregants during a recent church service.

In a viral video, he scolded members for attending churches he had previously shut down, calling them cursed places. He went further to warn that those who defied his directive were no longer under his spiritual guidance.

His remarks have led to mixed reactions, with some questioning his leadership style while others see it as a necessary show of authority.

Ng’ang’a has a long history of making headlines for his outspoken and sometimes aggressive approach to religious leadership.

He is known for his dramatic sermons, unfiltered remarks, and strict control over his followers. While some see him as a bold spiritual leader who does not tolerate disobedience, others argue that his actions often cross the line of acceptable religious conduct.

His controversies are not new. In October 2021, the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) sanctioned his television station, Sasa TV, for violating broadcasting standards.

The suspension came after the station aired a sermon where he used obscene language, a move that raised concerns about his approach to preaching. Many saw this as a sign that his style of communication does not always align with the expected decorum of a religious leader.

In November 2023, the Atheists in Kenya Society called for his arrest following another viral video. In the clip, he was seen mocking a congregant for giving a Ksh500 donation, an act the society condemned as exploitative and unethical.

This incident further fueled debates about the conduct of religious leaders and their influence over followers, especially regarding financial contributions to churches.Critics argue that Ng’ang’a’s behavior undermines the integrity of spiritual leadership.

They believe that a pastor should lead by example, exercising humility, compassion, and respect for all members of the congregation, regardless of their financial contributions or level of devotion.

They question whether his frequent outbursts and public rebukes align with the principles of Christian leadership. On the other hand, his supporters defend him, claiming that his strict approach helps maintain discipline and order in his church.

They argue that religious leaders must sometimes be firm to prevent disorder and ensure their spiritual messages are followed. To them, Ng’ang’a’s leadership style may be unconventional, but it keeps his followers in check.

The latest incident has reignited discussions on the role and ethics of religious leaders in Kenya. Many Kenyans have taken to social media to express their views, with some accusing him of arrogance and others praising his unwavering stance.

His recurring controversies highlight the need for accountability in religious leadership. While authority is necessary for maintaining order in churches, it must be balanced with ethical responsibility and respect for congregants.

Religious institutions must ensure that leaders exercise their power with wisdom and fairness to prevent abuse and maintain credibility in their spiritual mission.
