ODM Leader Raila Odinga yesterday while touring Mbololo in Taita Taveta county met the man who saved him while serving 9 years in detention.
“I had the good fortune of spending time with Mzee John Mwavuda, my prison guard during my detention period at Manyani maximum prison.” He said.
Adding that Mr Mwavuda was kind enough to smuggle in pieces of toilet paper that “I would then use to write letters on to my loved ones”.
Mwavuda also doubled as the official courier for the prison and Mr Odinga would deliberately write official letters which would later trigger Mzee Mwavuda’s transfer to Nairobi.
“He risked his life and selflessly delivered messages to key contacts for me during these official trips.” Odinga said.
Odinga said he would forever be indebted to Mzee Mwavuda and promises to support him financially.
“Mzee John Mwavuda is a person I will be forever indebted to and I will support a project that is close to his heart that he has told me is about to come to fruition.” He said.
Mzee Mwavuda has now lost most of his close family members.
Odinga challenged Kenyans to pray for Mzee Mwavuda.
“Let us pray for strength and comfort for this selfless man. Hongera Shujaa Mzee John Mwavuda.” He said.
The surprise encounter happened while Mr Odinga was finishing the second day of his Taita Taveta county tour.
