President Ruto joins global leaders in Rome to bid farewell to Pope Francis

Pope Francis was buried in Rome, Italy, following a solemn funeral in Vatican City. The beloved pope, who died at 88 on April 21 after a stroke, was honored by thousands of mourners and over 50 world leaders, including Kenyan President William Ruto.

The funeral Mass, held at 10 a.m. in St. Peter’s Square, was led by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re. More than 200,000 people gathered, including presidents, monarchs, and everyday Catholics who came to pay their respects.

Among the leaders present were U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Prince William, a clear sign of the pope’s global impact. President Ruto was spotted among dignitaries as the casket passed, a rare moment of unity for leaders who are often divided.

Pope Francis, the first Latin American pope, was remembered for his strong care for the poor and his efforts to make the Church more open and welcoming to all.

The casket, placed on an open-topped popemobile, made its way through the streets of Rome. Thousands lined the roads, waving and shouting, “Ciao, Francesco!” as the procession moved along. It paused briefly at the Colosseum, allowing Romans to say goodbye to their bishop in a moment filled with deep emotion.

In a break from tradition, Pope Francis had chosen not to be buried inside the Vatican. Instead, he was laid to rest at St. Mary Major, a place close to his heart, near an icon of the Virgin Mary he dearly loved.

His tomb is marked simply with the name “Franciscus” in Latin, holding a bag of coins collected during his 12-year papacy and a document recording his work and achievements. The burial ceremony itself was private, reserved for close aides and a few family members.

However, the public will be allowed to visit his resting place starting April 27. His death closes a big chapter for the Catholic Church, and his memory will likely continue to inspire millions across the world for years to come.
