President William Ruto has joined a global list of some of the wealthiest world leaders, according to a recent publication by Yahoo Finance.
The Kenyan Head of State appears alongside other powerful figures such as former US president Donald Trump, Russia’s Vladimir Putin, and Rwanda’s Paul Kagame.
The list compares the financial fortunes of leaders across continents, highlighting the wide gap between the richest and the least wealthy heads of government.
Ruto, who became Kenya’s president in September 2022, is estimated to have a net worth of around $400 million, which translates to about Ksh51.7 billion.
This makes him one of the richest presidents in Africa and places him among the top global political figures with significant personal wealth.
Most of Ruto’s fortune is said to come from his investments in real estate, hospitality, and insurance.
Reports indicate that he owns the Weston Hotel in Nairobi and other properties in Mombasa and the Maasai Mara, estimated to be worth over $24 million. Additionally, he holds shares in the Africa Merchant Assurance Company (AMACO), further strengthening his financial portfolio.
In comparison, Ruto’s predecessor, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, was reportedly wealthier, with an estimated net worth of $500 million. However, both men stand out among African leaders for their business backgrounds and private investments.
Kenya’s inclusion in the Yahoo Finance report has drawn attention, as it shows that despite the country’s economic challenges, its top leadership sits among the global elite in terms of personal wealth.
The report also placed South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa ahead of Ruto with an estimated wealth of $450 million, while Rwanda’s Paul Kagame and Türkiye’s Recep Tayyip Erdoğan tied at around $500 million each.
The ranking showed a significant wealth gap among leaders, with Russia’s Vladimir Putin estimated at an extraordinary $200 billion, making him the richest leader in the world.
Other leaders such as Donald Trump, estimated at $7.2 billion, and Belarus’s Alexander Lukashenko, with $9 billion, followed in the top positions.
On the lower side of the list were leaders like Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro, who, despite earning one of the lowest presidential salaries in South America, was said to have a personal fortune of about $2 million.
Malaysia’s Anwar Ibrahim and the Philippines’ Bongbong Marcos were also featured, each with estimated fortunes in the range of a few million dollars, though Marcos Jr.’s exact net worth remains uncertain due to varying reports.
The Yahoo Finance publication painted a clear picture of how leadership and wealth often intersect globally. Some of the leaders, such as France’s Emmanuel Macron and Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky, built their wealth through careers in banking and entertainment before entering politics, while others inherited or accumulated it through political longevity and influence.
For Kenya, Ruto’s inclusion marks a milestone that underscores his rise from humble beginnings to the highest political and financial ranks.
His journey from a young chicken seller in rural Uasin Gishu to one of the world’s richest presidents has often been cited as a story of ambition and persistence.
Yet, it also sparks public debate about the growing divide between the political class and ordinary citizen.
The contrast between wealth and leadership remains a recurring topic of interest, reflecting both personal success and the broader socioeconomic realities each leader governs.
