Pope Francis struggles but smiles as He greets thousands after hospital stay

Pope Francis made his first public appearance since his hospitalization by stepping onto the balcony of Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. His emergence was met with applause from the thousands of people who had gathered in the square outside the hospital.

The Pope, who had been hospitalized since February 14th, smiled and waved to the crowd, offering his blessing despite the visible struggle to raise his hands.

His voice was faint, but he managed to express his gratitude, saying, “Thank you, everyone!” The faithful in the crowd responded with enthusiasm, chanting “Francesco, Francesco!” and “We love you!” Some held banners, while others raised their hands in prayer.

The Pope’s physical weakness was evident, but his determination to personally greet the people rather than rely on an intermediary spoke volumes about his character. He gave a thumbs-up to the gathering, a small but powerful gesture that reassured those present of his recovery.

His eyes scanned the crowd, and he noticed an Italian woman holding a bunch of yellow flowers. He acknowledged her with a wave, a moment that stood out amid the general excitement.

The atmosphere was filled with emotions as people expressed their support for the Pope, who had been battling health challenges. His brief appearance on the balcony was a testament to his resilience, as he stood there despite the toll that illness and medication had taken on his body.

After spending a few minutes interacting with the crowd, Pope Francis retreated from the balcony, and the faithful rushed toward the hospital doors, eager to catch one last glimpse of him before he departed. Moments later, he was seen leaving the hospital in his traditional white Fiat 500L, waving one final time as he drove away.

His departure marked the end of his stay at Gemelli Hospital, where he had received treatment under the care of medical professionals.

Following his release, the Pope’s first stop was the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, a place of deep spiritual significance for him.

There, he met with Cardinal Rolandas Makrickas, the Coadjutor Archpriest of the Papal Basilica. The Cardinal presented him with flowers, which Pope Francis placed before the icon of Mary Salus Populi Romani as a token of appreciation for the Virgin Mary’s protection during his illness.

This act of devotion was in line with his longstanding tradition of visiting the basilica before and after events in his life. Before leaving the hospital earlier that day, Pope Francis had taken time to personally greet and thank the doctors, nurses, and hospital leadership at Policlinico Agostino Gemelli. His appreciation for their care was evident, as he acknowledged their dedication to his well-being.

The Pope’s recovery and public appearance reassured many of his followers, who had been praying for his health. His departure from the hospital and subsequent visit to the basilica symbolized his gratitude and faith, reinforcing the strong connection he shares with the Catholic community worldwide.
