OCS Talaam, Deputy Ng’ang’a and DIG Lagat named by Mukhwana in Ojwang’s torture and murder

Police Constable James Mukhwana, who is now in custody over the brutal death of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang’, has finally spoken out.

His detailed statement paints a disturbing picture of what happened on the night of June 7, 2025, when Ojwang’ was being held at the Central Police Station.

According to a report seen by Citizen TV, Mukhwana has provided a chilling account that places the blame on his seniors, including the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Samson Talaam, and even the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Eliud Lagat.

In his statement to investigators from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority, Mukhwana explains that he was called into the OCS’s office during his shift. While there, he was told by OCS Talaam that there was a directive from DIG Lagat.

The message was clear Ojwang’, who would be brought in later that evening, was to be “disciplined” by the inmates.

When Mukhwana tried to question the orders, he says he was warned that disobedience could cost him his job. The message was threatening, and he felt he had no choice but to comply.

At around 9:00 p.m. that night, a black Subaru arrived at the station with a handcuffed man inside.

Mukhwana later confirmed it was Albert Ojwang’. He was booked into custody about 20 minutes later. Shortly after that, the so-called “discipline” began. Mukhwana says he saw four inmates Collins Ireri, Gil Ammiton, Brian Mwaniki, and Erick Ndambuki start to beat Ojwang’ inside one of the cells.

These four men have already been arrested and charged in court.

As the beatings went on, Mukhwana and another officer, PC Kimani, tried to stop the attack.

Ojwang’ was badly injured and bleeding when they found him. Mukhwana says he immediately told Deputy OCS Samuel Nganga to take Ojwang’ to the hospital. After that, he left for home at around 10:00 p.m.

The next day, June 8, he started receiving calls from colleagues asking if he had heard about what had happened to Ojwang’. When he contacted Nganga, he was told to speak to OCS Talaam.

Talaam told him not to worry, saying everything was fine and that they were “safe.”But things changed by June 11 when Mukhwana was summoned by IPOA to give a statement.

At first, he admits he lied to protect the other officers as part of a cover-up.

Later, when he realized his colleagues were blaming him alone, he felt betrayed. On June 12, he returned to IPOA and asked to give a second, truthful statement.

That same day, he was arrested and taken to Capitol Hill Police Station where he decided to confess fully.

In his final remarks, Mukhwana said Ojwang’ was not supposed to die but to be disciplined, and the instruction came from above OCS Talaam and DIG Lagat.

He expressed sorrow for Ojwang’s death and asked for forgiveness, saying he hopes the family finds healing. He also said he is ready to tell the full truth and has asked to be placed under witness protection for his safety.

His lawyers, Kevin Ondago, Clinton Mwale, and Bietta Wavinya, have confirmed that Mukhwana has instructed them not to ask for bail because he fears for his life.

They also say they have been followed and intimidated by people believed to be police officers.

They have already reported the matter at the Capitol Hill Police Station.
