Former U.S. President Barack Obama has paid a glowing tribute to Kenya’s long-serving opposition leader Raila Odinga, hailing him as a “true champion of democracy” whose life and legacy transcended national boundaries.
In a heartfelt message shared on his official platforms, Obama described Raila as a “child of independence” who dedicated his life to advancing freedom, justice, and good governance in Kenya.
He recalled Raila’s decades-long struggle for democratic reform, often marked by personal sacrifice and resilience in the face of adversity.
“Raila Odinga was a true champion of democracy. A child of independence, he endured decades of struggle and sacrifice for the broader cause of freedom and self-governance in Kenya,” Obama wrote.
The former U.S. president, whose father hailed from Kenya, said he personally witnessed moments when Raila put the interests of his country above personal ambition, a quality that set him apart from many of his contemporaries.
“Time and again, I personally saw him put the interests of his country ahead of his own ambitions. Like few other leaders anywhere, he was willing to choose the path of peaceful reconciliation without compromising his core values,” Obama noted.
Obama further praised Raila’s steadfast commitment to unity and peace, qualities that defined his political journey, from his fight against one-party rule to his calls for national dialogue and inclusivity in later years.
“Through his life, Raila Odinga set an example not just for Kenyans, but across Africa and around the world,” Obama said, adding that both he and former First Lady Michelle Obama extend their deepest condolences to his family and to the people of Kenya.
Raila Odinga, often described as the face of Kenya’s pro-democracy movement, leaves behind a profound legacy of courage, reform, and patriotism.
Obama’s tribute adds to a growing chorus of international voices honoring his enduring impact on Kenya’s political landscape and the continent at large.
Raila’s name will remain synonymous with resilience, reform, and an unyielding belief in the power of democracy.
