Nyamira County Assembly votes out Governor Nyaribo amid claims of misconduct and abuse of office

Nyamira politics has taken a sharp turn after members of the County Assembly voted to remove Governor Amos Nyaribo from office.

The development follows rising tension within the Assembly, where divisions over leadership and management issues have been growing for months.

The impeachment marks a significant moment for the county, which has seen repeated efforts to unseat the governor.

The latest motion was introduced by Bonyamatuta Ward MCA Julius Kimwomi Matwere. He accused the governor of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and making irregular appointments.

These accusations have been at the centre of the disagreements between the governor and a section of MCAs who have long pushed for accountability in county operations.

According to the Assembly, this was the third attempt to remove him from office, showing how strained the relationship had become.During the vote, 19 out of the 31 MCAs supported the move to impeach Governor Nyaribo.

Their decision reflected the dissatisfaction that has been building over time as they argued that the county leadership needed a change. While no MCA voted against the motion, four abstained, a signal of the divisions that still exist in the Assembly.

The remaining members were either absent or did not participate in the process.

The impeachment proceedings were conducted in line with Assembly procedures, with debates allowing members to present their views before the final vote.

Supporters of the motion insisted that the allegations raised were serious and could not be ignored. They claimed that the governor had failed to provide satisfactory responses to issues surrounding appointments and management decisions made during his tenure.

Governor Nyaribo’s removal now shifts the matter to the Senate, which will review the Assembly’s decision to determine whether the impeachment meets the constitutional threshold.

The Senate’s verdict will decide whether he is officially removed from office or reinstated.

For Nyamira residents, the situation creates uncertainty as they await the next steps and the impact the decision may have on ongoing county projects and services.
