Malema condemns U.S. Air strikes in Nigeria, calls for respect of African sovereignty

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has strongly criticized the United States for conducting air strikes targeting terrorist groups in Northwest Nigeria.

Malema argued that the actions undermine African sovereignty and reflect a disregard for the continent’s right to manage its security challenges independently.

Speaking during a press briefing, Malema questioned the legitimacy of foreign military interventions on African soil, asserting that they often exacerbate local conflicts instead of resolving them.

“Africa must be allowed to address its own problems. Foreign powers cannot decide for us what is right or wrong on our land,” he said.

The EFF leader also expressed concern over the potential human cost of the air strikes, warning that civilian lives could be endangered in the process.

He emphasized that African governments should lead the fight against terrorism, with international partners providing support rather than unilateral action.

Malema’s condemnation follows reports of U.S. air strikes in Northwest Nigeria, which targeted alleged terrorist hideouts. While the U.S. claims the strikes aim to protect civilians and curb terrorist activities, critics argue that such interventions violate national sovereignty and may fuel anti-Western sentiment.

The EFF has called for greater African unity and cooperation in security matters, urging regional organizations like the African Union to take a leading role in addressing terrorism.

Malema stressed that solutions should be locally driven, reflecting the social, cultural, and political realities of the affected communities.

Political analysts say Malema’s statements reflect a growing trend among African leaders and political parties advocating for self-determination in security and governance issues.

The debate over foreign military involvement in Africa is expected to continue, particularly in regions battling insurgency and terrorism.

Malema concluded by urging African nations to strengthen their security infrastructure and work collectively to combat terrorism, while ensuring that foreign assistance respects their sovereignty and democratic processes.
