The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) has dismissed reports claiming that Laura Wesonga, the young woman who was killed during a police operation in Busia, was one of its students.
In a public statement, the institution said it had noted with concern media reports identifying the deceased as a student at KMTC Busia Campus.
It clarified that the information was inaccurate and confirmed that Laura was not enrolled at the college.
Despite the clarification, KMTC expressed sympathy to the bereaved family, saying it was deeply saddened by the loss of a promising young woman.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of a promising young life and extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time,” the statement read.
The college also urged journalists and members of the public to verify information before publishing or sharing it, warning that inaccurate reports can cause unnecessary distress to grieving families and affected institutions.
Laura lost her life after she was caught in a shootout between police officers and suspected gang members in Marachi Estate, Busia.

She had reportedly been walking home after leaving a gym when the exchange of gunfire erupted.
Witnesses said she was an innocent bystander with no connection to the confrontatin. Her death sparked widespread grief and renewed concerns over public safety during security operations.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing as authorities seek to establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
KMTC’s clarification comes after several reports identified the deceased as one of its students, a claim the institution has now officially refuted.
