Kisumu County launches 12,000 seat capacity stadium, to be complete in 6 months

Kisumu county will now have a 12, 000 seat capacity stadium in six months time, says the Governor.

The construction of Jomo Kenyatta International stadium located at the Mamboleo ASK grounds was launched today by Governor Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o and Chief Administration Secretary in the ministry of Sports, Heritage and Culture Josephine Wakhungu and is expected to be complete by March 2021.

“The contractor has six months to complete and hand over the stadium that will have a 12,000 seat capacity.” Governor Nyong’o said in a statement.

Adding, it is a milestone as Kisumu moves to position itself as a regional centre for sports excellence. “We are planning to turn Kisumu into a Sports village complete with a Sports Academy.” He said.

The stadium will have main playing field, running tracks with 8 lanes, stands for spectators all round the stadium, VIP Parvillion, changing rooms, media centre, a boardroom, modern ablution block and ample parkings.

The Governor who was accompanied by Nyanza Agricultural Society (ASK) Chairman, George Ongudi, CAS Sports Josephine Wakhungu and other top officials from the county, also hinted that his administration is looking for more money to complete the renovation of the Moi International stadium.

The ultra modern Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium, Mamboleo which sits on a 100 acres piece of land is amongst the four stadia the National Government through the Ministry of Sports, Heritage and Culture are constructing in the country in collaboration by respective counties, such as the County Government of Kisumu. The other three are Jamhuri stadium in Nairobi county, Wang’uru stadium in Kirinyaga and finally Kirigiti stadium in Kiambu county.

With the completion of Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in six months, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Ground and Moi Stadium in few months to come, sporting events and sports tourism in the city under the sun will be highly boosted. This will see Kisumu County boast of three modern sports arena for both local and international games.

The project was unveiled by CS Sports Amnina Mohammed on June 24, 2020.
