English Premier League club Manchester United on Tuesday September 8 released their third kit ahead of the commencement of the 2020/21 season from Saturday September 12, drawing an outpouring of hilarious reactions on social media.
The new black and white striped kit with red detailing was unveiled by Adidas to complete United’s collection of shirts for the new 2020/21 season.

The shirt has a special recognition on the inside of the collar to recognise United’s 110th year of playing at Old Trafford, with a similar design to the plaque at the stadium for the centenary year at the Theatre of Dreams.
That anniversary proved central to the Adidas design team’s vision for the new kit, with various stripes on the concourse floor and safety shutters throughout the stadium catching the eye of lead designers Inigo Turner and Chris Barnard. Those stripes, as well as iconic striped United kits of the 1910-30s and the 1994-96 blue and white away shirt, were the inspiration behind the new striped design
Even before the kit’s official release, leaked images were making rounds on social media of the design, viewed by fans as a downgrade to the previous seasons.
Kenyans trolled the kit’s design, some linking it to a zebra’s iconic stripes while others linking it to the striped uniform prisoners wear in a prison facility.
“Man United using influencers to market their Third Jersey! Interesting times, marketing Prison clothes.” wrote one Bree Mong’ina on Twitter.
“This Man United kit is Scum” hit out media personality Annitah Raey.

“Man United really worked hard to creating the ugliest 3rd kit in recent history.” added Daily Nation columnist Mariga Thoithi.

The release of the new third shirt follows the launches of the new home kit, which celebrates the club’s DNA with an imprint of “Manchester United” running through the shirt, and an away jersey which pays homage to the club’s famous travelling away support.
While the team will take to the field wearing the jersey with accompanying white shorts and white socks, there will also be shorts and socks with the same pattern as the shirt, available for fans to buy.
So far it has been a week of below par third kits, with United’s release coming a day after Chelsea released their red and blue third kit.
Theirs combines vintage club colours, Nike sneaker heritage and a dose of 1990s nostalgia to create a fresh look for the new season.
The Blues’ new design is heavily influenced by the much-loved original Air Max 180, a shoe which was first released in 1991 and also shares the inspirations of the Chelsea kits of the era.
The colours shine through in a third kit which takes all those influences and creates a sharp, modern football kit.
The primary colour is ember glow, with ultramarine blue playing a strong supporting role. The blue appears on the jersey’s V-neck collar, shoulders and on vertical stripes which gradually fade away down the front of the shirt.
Ember glow shorts and blue socks complete the full look.
