An officer from the Kenya Defence Forces was on Tuesday arraigned before a court-martial at Langata Barracks to face charges of recruitment malpractices.

Captain Robert Kipkorir Mutai was accused of obtaining Ksh300,000 bribe to influence recruitment of two individuals into the Kenya Defence Forces.

Court prosecutor Lieutenant Colonel Arnet Naija said Captain Mutai was charged with obtaining money by false pretence contrary to Section 313 of the Penal code.

The prosecutor also noted that Mutai obtained the money contrary to provisions of section 121 of the Kenya Defence Forces Act, 2012.

The officer was charged with illegally obtaining Ksh90,000 on February 9, 2021 from Mahamed Shambaro with a promise that he would influence the recruitment of Abdulaziz Barisa Shambaro in Garsen recruiting center in Tana River County.

Mutai was also accused of obtaining Ksh210,000 from Sgt. Mwanaisha Abdalla in Marafa, Kilifi county in pretext that he aided the recruitment of Suleiman Hare Kaginya into KDF.

Mutai denied the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Hon. Boaz Ombewa, and the case was adjourned until January 25, 2022.
