KANU secretary general detained amid investigation into Mbobu killing

George Wainaina, the Secretary General of the Kenya African National Union (KANU), was arrested along with two others in connection with the murder of Nairobi lawyer Kyalo Mbobu. Wainaina is reported to have met with Mbobu just hours before the lawyer was shot on the evening of September 9.

According to reports, the two dined together at a city hotel, making Wainaina one of the last people to see Mbobu alive.

Police have confirmed that Wainaina and the other two suspects are undergoing questioning as part of ongoing investigations to identify the main person behind the killing.

Wainaina’s lawyer, Maulid Musa, stated that while his client was arrested from his home in Karen, he has not been officially informed of the exact charges or whether the arrest is directly linked to Mbobu’s death.

Musa said, “My client is George Wainaina, and he was arrested yesterday evening from his home in Karen. So far, we have not been informed of the exact charges facing him.

We do understand that there are investigations that are ongoing into the murder of a fellow advocate, which is really unfortunate.

But so far, we have not been informed whether the investigations being done are linked to my client’s arrest.”

Following the arrest, Wainaina was initially taken to Kileleshwa Police Station but was later moved to a hospital due to health concerns.

The other two detainees are being held at Kilimani and Capital Hill police stations.

Kyalo Mbobu was shot multiple times in a drive-by attack while returning home along Magadi Road in the Galleria Brookside area of Karen.

The autopsy revealed that he suffered eight gunshot wounds, with two bullets recovered from his body, and died from severe bleeding.

Before his death, Mbobu had attended meetings with unidentified individuals at a city hotel and later traveled to another meeting in the Central Business District.

Investigators have also reviewed CCTV footage showing Mbobu’s last movements, including a mysterious man dressed in black who appeared to follow him after leaving his office.

The murder has sparked outrage in the legal community.

On Friday, lawyers led by Faith Odhiambo, the President of the Law Society of Kenya, staged peaceful protests in Nairobi’s CBD demanding justice for Mbobu.

The case has drawn national attention as authorities work to uncover the truth behind the killing and bring the responsible parties to justice.

The investigation remains ongoing, with police focusing on tracing all individuals linked to Mbobu’s final hours. While Wainaina’s role is still unclear, his arrest highlights the seriousness with which authorities are treating this case and the urgent need to protect members of the legal profession.
