Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i is increasingly being seen as the next leader of the Jubilee Party as pressure mounts for him to run for the presidency in 2027.
There is growing support within the party, with insiders confirming that discussions are ongoing to position him as the flag bearer.
Many believe that Matiang’i has the leadership experience and credibility needed to challenge President William Ruto in the next general election.
At the same time, Matiang’i has already received an endorsement from the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), which has declared him its preferred candidate for the 2027 elections.
UPA leaders believe that he has the ability to lift Kenya out of its current economic difficulties. The party’s officials have described him as a strong candidate with a track record of performance, saying his leadership skills could be the solution to the country’s struggling economy.
“Our proposed nominee, Fred Matiang’i, is a strong candidate, a performer, and we have strong confidence in him. His vast experience in leadership and governance will save our country from its worrying and deplorable economic conditions,” the party stated.
Meanwhile, the Jubilee Party is also positioning itself for a comeback in the 2027 elections. Since former President Uhuru Kenyatta stepped back from active politics, the party has been struggling to define its leadership.

However, sources indicate that discussions are underway to have Matiang’i take over as the party leader while Uhuru remains the patron. Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni has confirmed that this is the direction the party is taking.
“Whether or not there was a meeting, the future of the party is to have Matiang’i as Jubilee Party Leader while Uhuru will remain as the patron,” Kioni stated.
Matiang’i’s growing influence in the opposition space has made him a key political figure ahead of the next general election.
If the plans to make him Jubilee’s leader succeed, he could emerge as a major force in 2027, providing an alternative to both President Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga.
His potential candidacy would likely reshape the political landscape, bringing together various opposition factions and offering a new direction for the country.
Political analysts believe that Matiang’i’s entry into the race could change the dynamics of the election. Having served in different ministerial positions under both Uhuru and former President Mwai Kibaki, he has built a reputation as a tough administrator.
His supporters argue that he has the leadership qualities needed to steer the country away from economic hardship and poor governance.
However, it remains to be seen how he will navigate the complex political alliances that will shape the 2027 elections. For now, both Jubilee and UPA appear to be preparing the ground for his candidacy.
If the momentum continues, Matiang’i could become one of the main challengers to Ruto’s re-election bid.
His ability to consolidate support across different political regions and appeal to voters beyond his Kisii base will be crucial in determining his chances.
As Kenya moves closer to the next election, Matiang’i’s political future will be one to watch closely.
