Kenya’s electoral agency has begun the search for a new Commission Secretary and Chief Executive Officer, a key position that will play a major role in the country’s preparations for the 2027 General Election.
In a notice released on Tuesday, July 28, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) invited qualified Kenyans to apply for the position, marking the start of a recruitment process that is expected to attract significant public attention.
The successful candidate will be appointed on a four-year contract that can be renewed. Besides serving as the commission’s chief executive, the holder of the office will also act as the accounting officer responsible for overseeing the institution’s daily operations and management.
The vacancy arose following the resignation of former CEO Marjan Hussein Marjan in February. Since then, the role has been held in an acting capacity by Moses Ledama Sunkuli as the commission continues with its activities and preparations for future electoral processes.
The new CEO will take charge at a critical time for the electoral body. With the 2027 General Election drawing closer, the commission is expected to undertake several major activities that require careful planning and coordination.
Among the responsibilities of the incoming chief executive will be overseeing voter registration exercises, managing election logistics, supervising procurement processes for election materials and ensuring the effective operation of the Kenya Integrated Election Management System (KIEMS).
The office holder will also be tasked with implementing decisions and policies approved by the commission while ensuring that electoral operations run smoothly across the country.
The role is considered one of the most influential positions within Kenya’s electoral system because of its direct involvement in the management of elections and related activities.
According to the requirements outlined by the commission, applicants must be Kenyan citizens and possess a university degree from a recognized institution.
Candidates are also required to have at least five years of experience in senior management positions.
In addition, the commission is seeking individuals with knowledge and expertise in fields such as elections management, governance, law, finance, public administration or political science. Applicants must also meet the integrity and leadership standards outlined in Chapter Six of the Constitution.
The IEBC has set August 11, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. as the deadline for submitting applications through email.
Those who make it to the shortlist will be required to present original academic certificates, professional credentials and clearance documents during the interview stage.
The recruitment comes as the commission continues efforts to strengthen its leadership team ahead of the next general election, which remains one of the country’s most significant democratic exercises.
