How Road CS Murkomen oversaw the shady Adani-JKIA deal that almost sold Kenya’s main airport

Kipchumba Murkomen, who previously served as the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport is at the center of controversy following his role in the controversial Adani deal.

When he was in charge of the transport ministry, a deal was struck with the Indian multinational Adani Group to manage Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). The agreement was valued at billions of shillings, and its secrecy raised alarm among Kenyans.

Many questioned why such a strategic national asset was being handed over to a foreign company with a history of fraud allegations.

Murkomen defended the deal, arguing that it would improve the efficiency of JKIA and attract more investment. However, critics pointed out that Adani Group had been linked to financial misconduct in multiple countries, and its involvement in Kenya’s aviation sector posed a serious risk.

The lack of transparency surrounding the agreement only fueled more suspicions. There were concerns that Murkomen and other senior government officials had approved the deal for their own benefit rather than for the good of the country.

The public outcry grew louder when reports emerged that the government had committed taxpayers’ money to finance a large part of the project while giving Adani full control of the airport for decades.

As international scrutiny on Adani intensified, the situation became more complicated. A New York court later charged Adani executives with financial fraud and bribery, forcing the Kenyan government to reconsider its position.

Facing immense pressure, President Ruto announced the cancellation of the deal, effectively confirming that there had been serious issues with the agreement.

The decision to cancel the contract raised questions about how such a controversial deal was approved in the first place and whether Murkomen had played a direct role in pushing it forward.

Even after leaving the transport ministry, the Adani deal continues to haunt Murkomen as Kenyans continue to demand accountability over his actions.

His reputation remains stained, and his credibility as a government official is now in doubt. The public remains skeptical about his leadership, especially after his role in one of the most questionable infrastructure deals in recent Kenyan history. Whether he can rebuild his public image or if the Adani scandal will continue to define his legacy remains to be seen.
