High court deals Senator Orwoba major blow in UDA expulsion case

Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba has suffered a major blow in her efforts to stop her expulsion from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). The High Court dismissed her application, saying it was filed in the wrong way.

Justice Lawrence Mugambi made the ruling, stating that Orwoba’s amended petition included new parties without asking the court for permission first. He said this mistake was serious enough to make the entire application invalid and unacceptable.

Orwoba had rushed to court on May 19 under a certificate of urgency after UDA officially expelled her from the party. The expulsion came after allegations that she had gone against the party’s rules and shown signs of disloyalty.

Her attendance at a political event hosted by former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i was one of the key reasons behind the party’s decision. Matiang’i, who is now seen as a strong potential opposition candidate for the 2027 presidential elections, held a homecoming ceremony that Orwoba took part in.

UDA leaders saw this move as a clear betrayal. The party’s Disciplinary Committee held internal sessions to listen to the matter before making its decision.

Afterwards, the party’s National Executive Committee gave final approval for the expulsion on the same day Orwoba filed her case in court. UDA then wrote to Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, asking him to remove Orwoba from her seat in the Senate.

The party also nominated Consolata Wabwire Wakwabubi to take over as a nominated senator.

In her court documents, Orwoba said the party treated her unfairly and went against the principles of natural justice. She said she was not given enough time to defend herself or respond properly to the accusations.

Earlier on, the court had agreed to temporarily stop the disciplinary process that was planned for May 16 so it could examine whether UDA followed the law in handling the case.

At first, Justice Mugambi agreed that there could have been some unfairness in how the party handled the issue. He said it looked like Orwoba may not have been given proper notice or a fair chance to explain her actions.

But even with those concerns, the judge focused on how Orwoba’s case was filed in court. He stressed that all legal procedures must be followed correctly, no matter how strong someone’s case might be.

The court ruled against her because she didn’t follow proper legal steps. This judgment leaves Orwoba with no seat in the Senate and uncertain about her political future.

UDA has remained firm in its stand that party loyalty must be upheld at all costs. As of now, Orwoba has not revealed what her next move will be, but many expect her to either go back to court or start looking for a new political home.
