Governor Sakaja turns Nairobi into a dumping ground in petty revenge against Kenya Power

Governor Johnson Sakaja’s leadership has once again come in question after his administration engaged in a shameful standoff with Kenya Power at Stima Plaza.

The decision by Nairobi County officials to dump garbage and block sewer lines outside the offices of KPLC was not only reckless but also exposed the governor’s lack of maturity in handling disputes.

Instead of following the law, Sakaja’s administration resorted to childish retaliation, behaving like illiterate goons rather than responsible leaders.

The dispute between Kenya Power and Nairobi County arose after KPLC disconnected electricity to several county offices over an unpaid debt of Ksh3.1 billion.

Rather than resolving the matter professionally, Sakaja’s government chose to turn Nairobi into a battlefield. County garbage trucks blocked entry to Stima Plaza while heaps of waste were deliberately dumped at the entrance, creating a public health hazard.

To make matters worse, county officers clamped several vehicles belonging to Kenya Power, further escalating the situation.

Instead of taking responsibility for unpaid bills, Sakaja’s government acted like street hooligans, proving that the leadership at City Hall is more interested in petty fights than in serving Nairobi residents.

This kind of action raises serious questions about the governor’s ability to lead. Nairobi, a city already struggling with poor waste management, flooding, and unreliable services, is being run like a personal fiefdom where government resources are used for intimidation instead of development. The childish display outside Stima Plaza is a clear sign that Sakaja is more focused on flexing his muscles than fixing the real issues affecting Nairobi.

It is embarrassing that a governor who campaigned on the promise of order and progress would resort to such crude methods to settle disputes. Instead of setting a good example, Sakaja is proving to be a leader who thrives on chaos.

Blocking sewers and dumping garbage as revenge is not just irresponsible but also criminal. Nairobi residents are already suffering from poorly managed waste collection, and yet the county government is using garbage as a weapon.

This move exposes the double standards of the Sakaja administration, which claims to be focused on making Nairobi a world-class city while engaging in such backward actions. Nairobians should be worried that their governor is more interested in revenge tactics than in governance.

If Sakaja cannot manage a simple dispute without turning it into street-level drama, how can he be trusted with bigger responsibilities? Nairobi deserves better leadership, one that prioritizes service delivery over petty fights. The governor must be reminded that leadership is about solving problems, not creating new ones. Using garbage as a tool for intimidation is a new low, and it proves that under Sakaja, Nairobi is headed in the wrong direction.
