Gideon Moi, the Baringo senator and scion of former president Daniel Moi empire has turn to spiritual guidance in his presidential bid even as the 2022 polls draws closer. The senator widely seen as the incumbent president Kenyatta favorite hasn’t publicly campaigned or rally support for his bid compared to early front-runners who are crisscrossing the country solidifying their support among the various groups, church leaders, youth and so on.
Senator Moi attended the inter-denominational prayers on Sunday July 26, 2020 organized by his party branch members in the region in Eldoret, Kenmosa grounds. According to the elders, the primary objective of the event was to seek spiritual guidance, blessings for is leader even as he prepares to battle out with other heavyweights in the upcoming polls.
“na tuombe yale pastor amesema (lets pray as per the pastors advise)” senator Moi told the congregants. “first of all, lets pray for Kenya, second let’s pray against Coronavirus and third let’s pray for leaders” the Baringo senator added largely speaking in his Kalenjin dialect at the event further stressing the need to take coronavirus as many people especially in rural areas have dismissed the concerns before and failed to abide by the regulations.
The Baringo senator attended the prayer ceremony in company of Elgeyo-Marakwet governor Alex Tolgos, Ainabkoi MP William Chepkut, Moiben’s Sila Tiren among other leaders with host of church leaders from the North-Rift region. The Baringo senator was scheduled to meet all delegates from North-Rift region after the event.
Ours being a deeply religious country with huge chunk of the country being Christians, the church is really influential and a key factor in determining the country’s leader, a strategy that is being used by the current top-contender in the race Deputy President William Ruto and seems to be paying dividends as his favorable ratings are ahead of other contenders by double digits if the recent poll is anything to go by.
The latest move by the senator to galvanize his support in the North Rift region widely regarded as the bastion of Dr. Ruto will further antagonize the two leaders and escalate the estrangement by adding embers of fires to their decades long political rivalry even as the polls are nearing.
