Tanzania’s third president Benjamin William Mkapa aged 81 years, has passed on, on Friday, the 24th of July in Dar es Salaam where had been admitted and was receiving treatment. President John Pombe Magufuli confirmed the information on live broadcast in Dodoma but says more updates on his death will follow.
Mkapa born in Ndanda, Southern Tanganyika, served as Tanzania’s president from 1995 to 2005 and gained popularity to get elected in the top seat thanks to the strong support he had to the founding father of the country, Julius Nyerere. Mkapa also served as a trustee in the Aga Khan University from November 2007 to 2012.
