Former CJ Maraga meets youths in Kibera as pressure for 2027 presidential candidacy mounts

Former Chief Justice David Maraga On Sunday, February 9, 2025, David Maraga met with young people in Kibera, Nairobi, as pressure mounts for him to come out of retirement and run for president in 2027.

In a statement posted on his official X account, Maraga stated that the young people had asked him to the ACK Holy Trinity Church in Kibra for their Youth Service.

Maraga, a Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) church member, stated that he attended the Sunday service as part of his ongoing outreach to young people.

“As part of my ongoing engagement with the youth, the young people invited me to the ACK Holy Trinity Church, in Kibra, Nairobi, for their ‘Youth Service’ today,” the former CJ wrote on X.

Following the service, Maraga says he had the opportunity to contact the kids, and he was amazed and encouraged by their passion and belief in the potential of a new Kenya that would solve their issues.

“The service was presided over by the Church Vicar, Barack Oduor, whose sermon was on Moses’ leadership of the Children of Israel out of Egypt,” Maraga stated.

“After the service, I had a chance to engage some of the youth and was impressed and encouraged by their enthusiasm and belief in the possibility of a new Kenya that will address their concerns.”

A group of political figures, attorneys, and Kenyans have been advocating for Maraga’s presidency in 2027, believing he would be a perfect competitor to President William Ruto.

Last month, Saboti Member of Parliament (MP) Caleb Amisi endorsed Maraga for president.

In a message posted to his official X account on Saturday, February 1, 2025, MP Amisi encouraged Kenyans to bring the former CJ out of retirement, gather resources, and campaign for him.

This, according to the politician, is the critical step in transforming the country.

He went on to say that Maraga is the right candidate to face President William Ruto in the 2027 elections.

“If Kenyans are looking for a new start, get @dkmaraga out of retirement, mobilise resources, and campaign for him,” he wrote. “The rest are usual political dinosaurs or representatives/scions of bourgeois status quo.

They will not sell against Ruto. It must be real and believable. Renaissance!” Nelson Havi, previous president of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), has made similar calls.

Havi has urged Maraga or his predecessor, Willy Mutunga, to come out of retirement and declare their candidacy for the 2027 president.

However, Maraga has not officially expressed his desire to run for president in 2027.Aside from Maraga, there are several famous personalities that could compete with President Ruto for the top job.

They include former Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang’i, Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Narc Kenya Party leader Martha Karua, and Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah.
