The Power generator Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has renewed the contract of Rebecca Miano its chief executive officer and managing director for a further three years. The Board chairman Joshua Choge terms extension appropriate after a “rigorous evaluation process” and “exemplary performance” at the helm of the power producer since taking reins 3 years ago.
“During Mrs. Miano’s three-year tenure, the company has continued on an upward growth trajectory, consistently reporting good corporate financial performance despite a difficult operating environment that has affected many other businesses globally,” the board said in statement.
MD Rebecca Miano crashed the glass-ceiling and became the first woman managing director and CEO of the State-owned firm in November 2017 after holding the position in acting capacity after the exit of Albert Mugo upon attaining retirement age.
Since her stint started, KenGen has established its dominance in power production in Kenya and the region while leading Kenya to be among top countries to embrace environmentally friendly sources of power in bid to minimize carbon emissions.
Mrs. Miano was among top 100 women African CEOs in 2019 due to her clout and influence in state agency. World bank also appointed her to be on advisory board to look into gender equality and development.
The KenGen asserted that the firm has continued to grow in terms of assets to post impressive results and generate adequate cash flows under Ms. Miano’s stewardship at the helm of power generation firm.
“This enabled KenGen to pay dividend of Sh2.6 billion to shareholders for the financial year 2018, followed by the successful final redemption of the listed KenGen Public infrastructure Bond in October 2019,” he said in a notice to shareholders.
MD Rebecca Miano joined the power producer in 1998 has steadily climbed the ranks in various roles including senior legal officer, assistant company secretary, legal affairs director and corporate governance. The MD holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree with Honors, a Diploma in Law and post-graduate studies in Comparative Law.
She is a member of the Institute of Certified Public Secretaries of Kenya (ICPSK) and the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).
