At the heat of the campaigns in Kibra for the by-election set for November 7 to replace the late MP Ken Okoth, the shovel met the dust and the dirty deals of the former Raila campaign manager were exposed.
It has been said time and again that Eliud Owalo who is now vying on ANC ticket for the Kibra by-election tampered with campaign resources in the 2013 general elections but no one has been bold enough to say how much. It was until the last weekend campaigns in Kibra that the revelations on how much Mr Owalo stole was revealed.
“What does Eliud Owalo have?” Ruaraka MP TJ Kajwang’ paused to the cheering crowd.
“If it is money, I have a lot of money that I will bring here” he continued.
He proceeded to drop a bombshell. “What has Owalo done, strategic management? What else does he have other than stealing sh15 million from the party, from Raila Odinga?” He paused again.
The Ruaraka MP is also evidently not pleased with the tendency of Musalia’s ANC party fielding candidates in ODM party strongholds. “ANC brought a candidate in my constituency, I opted to chase her away. I have experience with this thing called ANC Party” he said
The ODM Party has swiftly moved into serious campaigns. Their strategy of “work in silence” seems to be yielding fruits. On Saturday and Sunday, they divided themselves into two groups, that of women and men. Women wing was led by Ruth Odinga, ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga’s younger sister. The other wing was led by Former Starehe MP Maina Kamanda and Raila Junior, Mr Odinga’s son. Other leaders present included George Aladwa (Makadara MP), TJ Kajwang'(Ruaraka MP), Simba Arati(Dagoreti North MP), Antony Oluoch(Mathare Mp), Edwin Sifuna (ODM Party SG),host of MCAs and key grassroot officials and opinion leaders.
“Bernard Otieno Okoth Imran is not new here. He knows them by name. He will not pretend to be a welder when he is not, he will not pretend to be a builder when he is not. He knows the youths need employment. He knows, draft can only be played after work and when one has something in the pocket and good on the table for his family. Yes, and the youth in Kibra know he is capable of helping them achieve their dreams.” Was their message throughout the weekend.
Jubilee candidate McDonald Mariga also combed the area asking residents to abandon the bondage of opposition and join the government.
“Kibra has been in the opposition for too long. It is time for people of Kibra to try the government to see the development that will come to them” McDonald Mariga said.
ANC party candidate Eliud Owalo only questioned why the late Ken Okoth employed his kins in his office. “Why should you bring in your wife and brother? It is the people of Kibra who should sit on the board, not relatives,” he said. Imran Okoth served as the Kibra CDF manager during his brother’s tenure as a Member of parliament. Mr Owalo has been accused by locals of setting their houses on fire at night only to come with material support in the day.
“Someone is busy burning down kibra to gain political mileage. Why play with people’s lives? Two within a week?” Our source asked.
