Education Ministry clarifies term three reopening date after fake notice circulates

Parents, teachers and learners have been urged to ignore a notice circulating online claiming that the reopening of schools has been postponed.

The Ministry of Education, through the State Department for Basic Education, issued the clarification on Wednesday, August 19, saying the notice was fake and did not come from the ministry.

The department warned the public against relying on information shared through social media without confirmation from official government channels.

The ministry confirmed that the reopening dates for Term Three remain unchanged. Learners are expected to report back to school from Monday, August 24, 2026, as earlier communicated.

The State Department described the circulating post as fake news and urged parents, guardians, teachers, learners and other members of the public to disregard it.

The warning comes only a few days before schools are expected to reopen, a time when families are making final preparations for the new term.

The false notice had claimed that Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba had directed the postponement of reopening to September 15 for senior schools and all secondary schools.

The ministry has maintained that no such postponement has been announced. It also advised the public to depend on official communication from the Ministry of Education whenever there are changes to the school calendar.

Term Three is scheduled to begin on August 24 and run for nine weeks before schools close on October 23, 2026.

It will be the final term of the 2026 school year and will be followed by national assessments and examinations at different levels.

The examination period is scheduled to begin on October 26, starting with several assessments under the competency-based education system. The Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) will run from October 26 to October 29.

The Kenya Intermediate Level Education Assessment (KILEA) and the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) are also scheduled to begin on October 26.

The Kenya Pre-Vocational Level Education Assessment (KPLEA) will start on November 2.

For secondary school learners, the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations will begin on November 2 and run until November 20, 2026.

The completion of the KCSE examinations will mark the end of the academic year and make way for an eight-week December holiday.

With schools set to reopen on August 24, the Ministry of Education has asked the public to ignore unverified notices and follow official updates on the school calendar.
