EACC recovers Sh6.5 million from Turkana finance CEC Michael Eregae Ekidor amid Sh600 million corruption probe

A major corruption scandal is unfolding in Turkana County after a raid by officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) led to the discovery of Sh6.5 million in cash hidden inside a car used by Michael Eregae Ekidor, the County Executive Committee Member (CEC) in charge of Finance.

The discovery is part of a larger investigation into the alleged embezzlement of Sh600 million by senior officials in the County Government of Turkana.

Michael Eregae Ekidor is among ten top county officials being investigated over missing funds that were meant for development projects between the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 financial years.

According to the EACC Chief Executive Officer Abdi Mohamud, the operation was successful and helped obtain important evidence.

He said the officers carried out searches on Thursday, 10th April 2025, at the homes and offices of the suspects, including Michael Eregae Ekidor.

Other individuals being investigated include Peter Lomurukai, the chief officer for municipalities and urban management, Mark Achila Ekiri, chief officer for roads and transport, Samson Nakito, the procurement director, Lilian Alaper Ateyo, a senior accountant, and Annah Narot Longoli, a cleaning supervisor, along with her spouse John Tioko Ekal.

The list also includes Abenyo Amathwel Etir, a security warden at the county government, Stephen Lowoton, former assistant director of accounting, William Erex Aminit, a businessman, and Nngiro Edung Ichor, also a businessman.

The Commission revealed that a court order had earlier been secured to freeze Sh180 million found in bank accounts linked to Abenyo and companies connected to him.

The EACC stated that the suspects allegedly took advantage of their offices to carry out corrupt activities.

Michael Eregae Ekidor, who was at the center of the raid, is suspected of using his position to accumulate wealth illegally during his time in office.

The cash recovered in his car is now part of the evidence that could be used in court to support the charges of corruption and economic crimes.

The Commission said that the funds were reportedly paid out for questionable procurement deals. Some of the companies used for these transactions are believed to be linked directly to the suspects.

The investigation was triggered by public complaints, and it aims to hold accountable those responsible for misuse of public funds.

EACC said it is committed to ensuring that justice is served and that those involved in looting public money in Turkana County are prosecuted.

As the case develops, more details are expected to emerge, but already it has sent shockwaves through the county government and among residents who feel betrayed by leaders they trusted.
