EACC moves to seize assets worth ksh1.9 billion from Waititu over unexplained wealth

Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu is once again in the spotlight as the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) moves to seize assets worth over Sh1.9 billion.

The anti-graft agency has raised concerns about how Waititu acquired these properties, arguing that he has failed to provide a credible explanation for their ownership.

Among the assets targeted are three modern, multistorey buildings strategically located in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).

These buildings, which are valued at billions, have become the focal point of an investigation into Waititu’s wealth.

The EACC has intensified its crackdown on corruption and unexplained wealth, particularly among public officials who have amassed riches beyond their known earnings.

Waititu, a former county chief, has been under scrutiny for years, with allegations of graft following him even after he was removed from office.

His wealth, especially the Nairobi properties, has raised eyebrows, with investigators questioning how he managed to acquire such high-value assets within a short period. Given the prime location of the buildings, they are considered a major investment, making it even more critical for Waititu to explain how he could afford them.

Reports indicate that Waititu has been unable to provide sufficient documentation or proof of legitimate income sources to justify his real estate empire.

This lack of a clear explanation has prompted the EACC to initiate legal proceedings aimed at recovering the properties, arguing that they could have been acquired through corrupt dealings.

The agency’s actions align with its mandate to recover stolen public funds and property acquired through illegal means. The move to seize the buildings is part of a broader effort to hold former and current public officials accountable for their wealth.

This is not the first time Waititu has found himself entangled in corruption-related cases. His tenure as Kiambu governor was marred by allegations of financial mismanagement, questionable tenders, and abuse of office.

He was eventually impeached, with accusations that he had misused public funds and engaged in irregular procurement practices.

Even after leaving office, his legal troubles have continued to follow him, with multiple cases still pending in court.

The latest asset seizure effort adds to his growing list of legal battles, further complicating his situation. For Waititu, the risk of losing properties worth billions is a significant setback.

If the courts approve the EACC’s request, it would mean that he will no longer have control over the contested buildings, which could then be auctioned or transferred to the state.

This case also highlights the increased scrutiny on public figures, particularly those suspected of accumulating wealth through corrupt means. The EACC has vowed to intensify its efforts to ensure that no one benefits from proceeds of corruption, a move that could put many other politicians and former government officials in trouble.

The push to seize Waititu’s assets sends a strong message that the fight against corruption is far from over. While the former governor may still have legal avenues to challenge the proceedings, the fact that he is unable to explain how he acquired the properties puts him in a difficult position.
