Public outrage over corruption in the traffic department has once again come to the spotlight after five police officers were caught engaging in bribery along the Busia–Kisumu Road. The officers were intercepted by officials from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) during a sting operation that exposed their illegal activities near Busia Town.
The arrests followed several complaints from motorists who accused the officers of extorting money at an unlawful roadblock.
EACC sources revealed that the officers had turned the busy route into a money-making zone, demanding cash from drivers before allowing them to continue their journeys.
Acting on intelligence reports, the anti-graft officials carried out surveillance for several days before finally moving in to arrest the suspects. The operation was executed swiftly to prevent the officers from escaping or tampering with evidence.
Following their arrest, the officers were taken to the EACC Western Regional offices in Bungoma for further processing. They are expected to face corruption-related charges once investigations are complete.
The EACC has maintained that the arrests mark another significant step in its campaign to root out corrupt practices among law enforcement officers, particularly within the traffic department, which has long been criticized for bribery and abuse of power.
According to investigators, the operation is part of a broader nationwide effort to dismantle networks of extortion that have tainted the reputation of the police service. The agency emphasized that corruption within traffic operations undermines public trust and promotes impunity, which can lead to more serious violations of the law.
EACC officials have promised to continue monitoring similar hotspots across the country to ensure that officers serve citizens with integrity.
