DCI links government board member to MP’s killing using fraudulent SIM cards

Ebel Ochieng, a board member of the Lake Basin Development Authority, is now at the centre of a serious murder investigation. He has been accused of planning the killing of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were, a man he knew personally as a neighbour in Homa Bay.

According to reports from the People’s Daily newspaper, the case has taken a dramatic turn after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations confirmed that Ochieng was arrested.

Investigators claim that he had threatened the MP before the murder and was also behind a scheme to hide his tracks by registering several mobile phone numbers under false identities. The investigators say Ochieng, who also goes by the nickname ‘Dave Calo’, played a major role in the murder. A sworn affidavit from detectives reveals that suspects already in police custody pointed directly at Ochieng as the one who planned the entire operation.

The investigating officer told the court that mobile phone numbers linked to Ochieng were part of the evidence connecting him to the killing. The DCI says they consider this case a “major breakthrough,” and this comes after ballistic tests matched the weapons found with suspects to the crime that took the MP’s life.

What makes the case more chilling is that Ochieng and the late MP were neighbours, which adds a disturbing personal layer to the story. Instead of being questioned as a bystander or someone with distant knowledge, Ochieng is now being treated as a key figure in the whole murder plot.

The police believe he not only planned the murder but took extra steps to hide his involvement, especially by using multiple SIM cards that were not registered under his real name.

This move was meant to confuse investigators and cover his tracks, but it appears that the strategy failed. Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome said the evidence collected so far is strong and leaves little room for doubt.

From witness statements to mobile tracking records and gun analysis, it seems that the authorities are building a strong case against Ochieng and others who may have helped him.

Police say they are following new leads while keeping Ochieng in custody for more questioning. Many are now waiting to see whether more arrests will be made or whether the case will lead to a conviction that brings justice to the late MP’s family.
