Court hands death sentence to four in Muchai killing after 2015 trial comes to an end

Four people convicted of robbery with violence in connection with the killing of former Kabete Member of Parliament George Muchai, his two bodyguards, and a driver have been sentenced to death.

The judgment brings to a close a case that has taken several years in court following the deadly attack that shocked many in 2015.

The four, Erick Munyera, Raphael Kimani, Mustafa Kimani and Stephen Asitiva, were found guilty on three counts of robbery with violence.

The court handed down the sentence on Thursday after concluding that the prosecution had proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), a total of 36 witnesses testified during the trial.

Their evidence placed the accused at the scene of the crimes and linked them to a series of violent robberies carried out over two nights in February 2015.

“The prosecution proved that on the nights of 6th and 7th February 2015, the four accused persons violently robbed Michael Ngatia, Gladys Waithera, and Irene Muthoni on separate occasions while armed with a G3 rifle and pistols and threatened to use violence against them,” the ODPP said in a statement.

During the robberies, the attackers stole property valued at about Ksh 1.1 million.

The stolen items included two motor vehicles, a gas cylinder, four mobile phones, a laptop and cash.

The court heard that the group used firearms to threaten their victims and carry out the crimes. In the same ruling, two other accused persons, Jane Wanjiru and Margaret Njeri, were each sentenced to 10 years in prison.

They were found guilty of being in possession of a firearm and ammunition without a valid firearm certificate.

The case is tied to the fatal shooting of Muchai and three of his aides on February 7, 2015, in Nairobi.

Police described the attack at the time as well planned, noting that the gunmen targeted the victims and shot them at close range.

Seven suspects had initially been charged in connection with the incident, including Simon Wambugu Gichamba, alongside the six who have now been sentenced.

The court’s decision marks a significant step in addressing a case that has remained in the public eye for years, as families of the victims continue to seek closure.
