Nandi Senator Kiprotich Cherargei has sharply criticised former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua following Saturday’s Kikuyu rally in Kiambu County that was marred by chaos, reports of injuries, and allegations of business looting.
Cherargei accused organisers of allowing lawlessness and called for investigations by security agencies into the incident, which drew a heavy police presence.
The rally, convened by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, was held in Kikuyu town amid heightened political tension in parts of central Kenya.
Reports indicated that the gathering was disrupted by running battles between groups, with police deploying tear gas to disperse crowds.
Several vehicles and businesses were reportedly affected as security officers restored order.
In a statement, Cherargei alleged that Gachagua had fostered a pattern of political violence and intimidation, claiming:
“Former impeached Deputy President Gachagua is a modern political conman that thrives in violence, intimidation, blackmail, brinkmanship, and balkanisation of the country that was the hallmark of his meeting in Kikuyu town, Kiambu County today,” the senator said.
He further expressed concern over injuries and destruction of property, urging compensation for affected residents and businesses.
“Quick recovery to Kenyans who were injured today, and businesses looted today. The conveners of the botched rally must be forced to provide compensation. The Inspector General of Police and DCI must immediately arrest and prosecute him and other goons for the lawlessness witnessed today, including robbery with violence on many businesses and vehicles. The police must have ensured rule of law and order,” he stated.
Cherargei also questioned alleged security equipment seen during the rally and raised concerns about electoral preparedness, calling on institutions to act decisively ahead of the 2027 polls.
“What shocks Kenyans is how he acquired police helmets, military fatigues, cache of weapons, signal jammers, and bulletproof vests, yet they are not sold in supermarkets. The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has been dormant, yet the country is being set up for election violence in 2027,” he added.
