A suspect wanted for the murder of British businessman Campbell Scott has died by suicide while on the run.
Authorities confirmed that Samuel Musembi, who was accused of playing a role in Scott’s murder, took his own life on Wednesday.
Musembi was wanted for allegedly driving the truck that transported Scott’s body from Pipeline, Nairobi, to Makongo Forest in Makueni County, where it was discovered partially decomposed on February 22, 2025.
After weeks of hiding, Musembi was found in Dandora, Nairobi, where he had sought refuge at a relative’s home.
Investigators revealed that he had been staying at a friend’s house, claiming he needed a quiet place to rest away from his usual residence.
His host, unaware of his fugitive status, went to work on Tuesday morning, leaving Musembi alone in the house. However, he later informed family members that Musembi had seemed restless before he left.
When the friend returned in the evening, he found the door locked from the inside and had to force entry. Inside, he discovered Musembi lying on the bed, foaming at the mouth and nose, with blood flowing from a stab wound on his neck.
The friend immediately contacted Musembi’s family and neighbors before rushing him to Mama Lucy Hospital.
However, the hospital declined to admit him due to the severity of his condition, prompting a transfer to Kenyatta National Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on Wednesday morning.
An officer involved in the investigation suggested that Musembi took his own life due to the pressure of being hunted by authorities. Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin confirmed his death, stating that an autopsy would determine the exact cause.
Preliminary reports indicate that Musembi may have ingested a toxic substance before attempting to stab himself when the poison failed to work. His family and hospital staff later alerted police about his death.
As part of the ongoing investigation, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is now focusing on collecting Musembi’s DNA and fingerprints while also tracking down the person who sheltered him.
The host remains missing, and authorities are keen to determine whether they had any knowledge of Musembi’s fugitive status.
Musembi was one of three suspects being pursued for Scott’s murder. The DCI had appealed to the public on March 7 for information that could lead to his arrest, along with that of Benard Mbunga Mbusu and Alphonse Munyao Kilewa, also known as Edu.
According to investigators, the suspects lured Scott into a business meeting in Nairobi before he disappeared on February 17. His body was later found bound and dumped over 100 kilometers away in Makueni.
Scott, 58, had arrived in Kenya only days before his murder to attend a business conference. Detectives believe that after his death, the suspects attempted to use his credit cards to access money in Nairobi, Voi, and Mombasa.
Two individuals, Alex Mutua Kithuka and Albunus Mutinda Nzioki, are currently in custody and have been assisting with the investigation. They appeared in court last Monday, where prosecutors revealed that Scott was likely murdered at Mutua’s home in Pipeline before his body was transported to Makueni.
Mbusu, who remains at large, was last seen on CCTV footage with Scott on February 16. Authorities claim he has a criminal record dating back to 2018, raising further concerns about his potential involvement in other crimes.
The search for him and the remaining suspect is ongoing as detectives piece together the details of Scott’s brutal murder.
