Anxiety has gripped three villages in South Mugirango following the discovery of an unknown sickness. More than 200 residents have been diagnosed with an unknown sickness.
A multi-agency government team, working with the Ministry of Health, has recommended residents visit nearby hospitals while the ministry awaits results from the government chemist.
On Saturday morning, Veronica Nyomenda and other Amarondo villagers hurried to one of her three children, who had been infected with a strange disease that was devastating three villages in South Mugirango.
Everyone’s expression is filled with fear, and this young child is one of hundreds who have been suffering from runny stomachs, bloody feces, fever, and severe headaches.
She, however, was unable to ensure her daughter’s treatment due to a lack of funds and chose to return her to her home.
Another family, just a few metres away, is in misery; seven members have contracted the sickness.
Their mother is the most recent addition, and she relies on neighbors for assistance because walking has grown difficult.
About 200 metres from this homestead, we come across another family battling with loved ones who are having identical symptoms.
Despite the fact that the continuous pain has lasted, they have relied on the antibiotics they received from a neighboring level two hospital.
The situation is no better at one institution, where over 15 children were transported to the hospital after exhibiting similar symptoms.
A multi-agency team has scoured the towns, attempting to determine what is going on. Locals have also been instructed to boil any water they wish to use, with samples already sent to the government chemist for further analysis.
Since the disease’s spread, an unknown number of villagers have been sent to Tabaka Mission Hospital, Nyatike Level 2 Hospital, Prina Hospital, and the Royal Hospital in Rongo, among other private facilities in the vicinity.
