Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has announced that he will soon reveal the political party through which he intends to run for president in the 2027 general election.
Speaking during an exclusive interview on TV47 and Radio 47, Matiang’i dismissed claims that he is a member of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party.
He clarified that while he worked in government under Jubilee, he has never been formally registered as a member.
“People assume my political home is Jubilee because of my years in public service under that administration. But I have not declared any party membership,” Matiang’i said.
According to him, several political formations have reached out, including Jubilee and Peter Munya’s Party of National Unity (PNU). However, Matiang’i revealed that he is still weighing his options while also holding discussions with like-minded leaders on possible partnerships.
He downplayed public impatience about his decision, insisting that the process requires careful thought.
“I do not understand why people are in such a hurry. These conversations take time,” he remarked.
Asked about his relationship with the newly launched Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) led by Rigathi Gachagua, Matiang’i said he would only decide when the moment is right.
He also criticized Kenyans’ habit of voting based on party affiliations rather than leadership qualities.
“You can come with a party called Jerusalem, but if you are corrupt, that party does not make you holy,” he stated.
Matiang’i is part of a united opposition team that includes Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and Martha Karua.
All have expressed interest in contesting for the presidency in 2027, raising questions about who will eventually carry the opposition’s flag.
The former CS maintained that his priority is engaging citizens directly, building trust, and seeking their support as the country inches closer to another high-stakes election.
