Detectives have launched investigations after 33 bodies discovered in a mass grave in Kericho County were traced to a hospital in Nyamira County.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), preliminary findings indicate that the bodies are linked to a facility believed to be operating in Nyamira.
Police said the bodies were exhumed from the grave in Kericho following reports from members of the public, prompting further inquiries into their origin.
Authorities noted that early investigations suggest the deceased may have been moved from the hospital under unclear circumstances.
According to the DCI, investigators are working to establish the identities of the deceased and the circumstances under which they died.
The agency stated that officers have already begun collecting forensic evidence and recording statements from individuals connected to both the Kericho site and the Nyamira hospital.
Police have not yet confirmed the cause of death or whether foul play was involved.
They emphasized that conclusions will depend on post-mortem examinations and detailed forensic analysis.
The bodies have since been transferred to mortuaries to allow for autopsies and possible identification by relatives.
Authorities also indicated that they are examining the operations of the Nyamira-based facility as part of the investigation.
Officials said regulatory compliance, record-keeping, and handling of bodies are among the issues under review.
Unconfirmed reports on social media have suggested possible malpractice at the hospital; however, police have urged the public to avoid speculation and allow investigations to proceed.
The DCI said the inquiry is ongoing and assured the public that appropriate action will be taken once investigations are complete.
