The race for the Mombasa governorship in 2027 is already taking shape after the United Opposition named Nyali Member of Parliament Mohammed Ali as its preferred candidate.
The announcement signals early political alignments as leaders position themselves ahead of the next General Election.
The declaration was made during a roadside rally in Roysambu where Democracy for the Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua addressed supporters.
He said the opposition team had agreed to front Mohammed Ali for the Mombasa governor seat. According to him, discussions are ongoing among key leaders on which party ticket the candidate will use.
Gachagua explained that the United Opposition wants to present a strong and united front in the coastal county.
He mentioned that he and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, together with other leaders, will agree on the political vehicle that Ali will use to run.
He stressed that unity among opposition leaders will be key in strengthening their chances in 2027.
Mohammed Ali welcomed the endorsement and said he is ready to contest.
He promised to tackle cartels and deal firmly with leaders he described as rogue.
He told supporters that his focus will be on restoring order and ensuring that the interests of Mombasa residents are protected.
He also called on young people to take a leading role in shaping the county’s future, saying the time has come for a new generation of leadership.
The MP said he has the backing of Gachagua and Kalonzo, adding that those spreading propaganda should know that the opposition leaders are in agreement over his candidacy.
He expressed confidence that he will be able to unite voters and deliver victory for the opposition in Mombasa.
Ali recently left the ruling United Democratic Alliance after raising concerns about what he termed as intolerance within the party.
He accused some officials of trying to frustrate his political ambitions as he prepares for the 2027 race.
His fallout with UDA leaders has played out in public, especially in his exchanges with Secretary General Hassan Omar, who is also eyeing the Mombasa governorship.
Ali has accused him of sidelining leaders who hold independent views and encouraging internal divisions. In October 2025, Ali shared photos of himself meeting Gachagua and Kalonzo.
He captioned the images with a message suggesting that some political moves are better left undisclosed until the right time.
The meeting fueled speculation about his next political step, which now appears clearer with the opposition’s endorsement.
With more than a year before campaigns officially begin, the battle for Mombasa is already gaining momentum as alliances continue to form and leaders declare their intentions.
