From parliament rebuke to reality as Thuku recalls Ichung’wah’s role in succession debate

Wahome Thuku, an advocate of the High Court, has revived a past political debate with a sharp and reflective statement posted on his Facebook account.

In his post, Thuku recalled an incident when Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah openly discussed him in Parliament.

The debate stemmed from Thuku’s earlier public argument about constitutional succession and the implications of a scenario where President William Ruto could no longer serve. At the time, Thuku had questioned what Kenya would look like if such a situation arose and the deputy president assumed office.

His remarks stirred controversy, attracting criticism from leaders allied to the government, including Ichung’wah, who took the matter to the floor of the National Assembly.

Thuku now suggests that time has vindicated his concerns. He notes that the political realities Kenya has since witnessed give new meaning to debates that were once dismissed or ridiculed.

His post carries a tone of irony, implying that those who opposed the discussion may now privately reflect on it with unease.

When Thuku made the remarks, Rigathi Gachagua was serving as Deputy President. His subsequent impeachment and removal from office dramatically altered the country’s political landscape, turning what once seemed like a hypothetical debate into a lived constitutional moment.

According to Thuku, the episode underscores the importance of open debate on governance and leadership transitions.

He argues that raising difficult questions should not be treated as disloyalty or fearmongering, but as part of democratic maturity.

The lawyer’s comments have sparked renewed discussion online, with Kenyans revisiting how power succession is handled and debated in the country. Some agree that early conversations help prepare institutions and the public for uncertainty.

Others view Thuku’s statement as a subtle critique of political arrogance, warning leaders against dismissing uncomfortable questions.
