DCP and Wiper plot massive sweep of Nairobi’s top seats

A growing push to reshape Nairobi’s political landscape is taking shape as former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua moves to position himself and his Democracy for the Citizens Party at the centre of the 2027 race.

His latest announcement of a political alliance with Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper Party signals a coordinated attempt to build a strong joint force targeting the capital’s most influential seats.

The two parties are now presenting themselves as a unified front with a shared mission to dominate all top leadership positions in the city during the next general election.

During a Thanksgiving ceremony for the Kariobangi North MCA-elect, Gachagua explained the thinking behind the alliance and the roadmap he believes will elevate both parties.

He described the partnership as a deliberate and well-planned arrangement that gives DCP the bulk of the responsibility in Nairobi politics, while Wiper complements the strategy by securing several areas across the city.

He stated clearly that DCP is eyeing the Governor, Senate, and Woman Representative positions as part of its broader ambition to take control of the capital. In his remarks, he shared the numbers that the two sides have agreed on, saying, “We have an arrangement with the Wiper party leader.

Out of 17 constituencies, DCP will take 16. Out of 85 wards, between DCP and Wiper, we will have 75.”As he defended the deal, Gachagua also touched on tensions within the United Opposition coalition.

He suggested that some leaders have been holding private meetings and forming alliances without involving the wider leadership of the movement.

His comments reflected an internal struggle among opposition figures who are now competing for influence ahead of the next election cycle. By framing his alliance with Wiper as transparent and strategic, he positioned himself as a leader building a more organised and predictable political vehicle.

Gachagua also spoke about voter behaviour in Nairobi, making the claim that those who supported President William Ruto in 2022 were not necessarily UDA loyalists but instead his own supporters.

He stated, “Those who voted for Ruto in Nairobi were not UDA supporters. They were Riggy G supporters, and I left with all of them.”

His statement was meant to underline his personal influence in the capital and suggest that his new party has a strong foundation as it prepares to compete for leadership positions.

Reflecting on recent by-elections, he turned attention to DCP’s performance across different regions. He clarified that the party did not field a candidate in Mbeere North, yet critics focused heavily on that race.

Gachagua insisted that where DCP actually participated, it won three out of five seats, adding that he only visited Mbeere North to support the Democratic Party.

By repeating this explanation, he aimed to counter any narrative that his party was struggling to gain ground nationally.

He also used the event to commend the Kariobangi North MCA-elect, making it clear that the MCA’s performance will determine whether he gets support for re-election in 2027. He encouraged him to prioritise real development and visible results for residents to maintain political credibility.

Gachagua further criticised what he described as attempts by government agencies to intimidate his supporters during campaigns.

He recounted incidents in Narok where he claimed police confronted him while he was campaigning for his party’s candidate in the Narok Town ward by-election.

He accused state actors of using hired goons to disrupt his activities and warned that force cannot influence how people vote.

As he put it, “Why are you sending goons to attack me, my community, and my supporters? You cannot use force to make people vote for you.”

The message he delivered in Kariobangi showed a leader trying to rally his base, solidify political partnerships, and fight off pressure from both state forces and rival opposition groups.

With the new alliance, Gachagua is now positioning DCP as a dominant player in Nairobi’s 2027 political contest.
