KJSEA examiner dies at Machakos girls during marking exercise

Machakos Girls High School has been facing a somber moment after the death of a Kenya Junior School Education Assessment examiner who was taking part in the ongoing national marking exercise.

The examiner, Nicodemus Mutuku, died on Monday morning at the marking centre where he had been working since November 7.

According to the Kenya National Examinations Council, Mutuku had been marking the Creative Arts and Sports paper and was serving as a team leader.

KNEC Chief Executive Officer David Njengere confirmed the incident in a brief statement, noting that Mutuku had been actively involved in the work until the time of his sudden death.Mutuku had a long history in the country’s examination system.

Before the full transition to the Competency-Based Curriculum, he worked as an examiner under the KCPE system.

He continued with the same role under the new assessment structure, contributing his experience during national marking sessions.

At the time of his death, he was a teacher at Nduluni Junior School in Makindu, Makueni County.

Colleagues who had been at the Machakos Girls marking centre said Mutuku had taken part in the month-long exercise like other examiners and had shown commitment to the assignment. His sudden passing brought a moment of shock among those present, as they had been working together for several days.

KNEC sent condolences to his family, fellow teachers, and the education sector, noting that his service over the years had been valuable.

The council also acknowledged the role he had played in the ongoing marking process and stated that his contribution was appreciated.
